  1. Q1Road signs

    STOP

What does an eight-sided octagonal traffic sign always indicate on Massachusetts roadways?

    1. AYou must come to a complete stop and yield right-of-way
    2. BSlow down and prepare to yield without stopping unless another vehicle is approaching
    3. CA sharp curve or other dangerous roadway hazard is located directly in your path
    4. DA designated school crossing zone where children are crossing the street
    Show answer

    A. You must come to a complete stop and yield right-of-way An octagonal (eight-sided) sign always means STOP under Massachusetts traffic law. Drivers must bring their vehicle to a complete halt before any painted stop line, crosswalk, or intersection boundary, yield the right-of-way to crossing pedestrians and approaching traffic, and proceed only when the way is completely clear.

  2. Q2Road signs

    YIELD

What is the meaning of a triangular downward-pointing traffic sign?

    1. ACome to an absolute halt in all circumstances
    2. BSlow down and yield the right-of-way to other vehicles and pedestrians
    3. CPassing is strictly prohibited in this zone
    4. DA divided highway begins ahead
    Show answer

    B. Slow down and yield the right-of-way to other vehicles and pedestrians A downward-pointing equilateral triangular sign always indicates YIELD in Massachusetts. Drivers must slow down to a reasonable speed, be prepared to stop if traffic conditions require, and grant the right-of-way to any oncoming vehicles, bicyclists, or pedestrians crossing your intended path. The handbook says that when you see a yield sign you should slow down and be prepared to stop.

  3. Q3Intersections and turns

At an all-way stop intersection in Massachusetts, if two vehicles arrive at the exact same moment, who has the right-of-way?

    1. AThe vehicle traveling on the wider street proceeds first
    2. BThe larger vehicle always has priority
    3. CThe driver on the right has the right-of-way
    4. DThe driver on the left proceeds first
    Show answer

    C. The driver on the right has the right-of-way Under Massachusetts right-of-way rules, at an all-way stop where two vehicles arrive and stop simultaneously, the driver on the right has the right-of-way. If vehicles arrive at different times, the first vehicle to come to a complete stop has priority to proceed across the intersection.

Massachusetts RMV Permit FAQ

The official Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles Class D learner's permit exam consists of 25 multiple-choice questions. You must answer at least 18 questions correctly to pass, which equals a 72 percent passing score. You are given a time limit of 25 minutes to complete the exam (approximately one minute per question).

Under Massachusetts law, you must be at least 16 years old to apply for a Class D learner's permit. Applicants under age 18 must have parental or legal guardian consent and are subject to Junior Operator Law restrictions.

If you do not pass the learner's permit exam, you may repay the $30 exam fee and schedule another attempt through the RMV or take it online via myRMV. Cheating or attempting to cheat results in an immediate failure and bars the applicant from applying for any permit or license for 60 days.

No. These are original practice questions written from the official Massachusetts Driver's Manual published by the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles and verified against its text, with manual chapters and page numbers cited on every answer. Yes. Open the exam simulator and sit a timed mock test of 20 questions built from the free questions, once, with no signup. Unlocking the exam adds full-length runs of 25 questions in 25 minutes (the published time limit), as many as you like, each a new draw from the whole bank.

The exam's agency publishes no topic weights, so it mixes topics in proportion to the question bank, favouring questions you missed before and never repeating one within a run. A retake is a new draw, so you will meet different questions. It is a practice mock test, not an official replica of the real exam.
