Indiana BMV Permit practice test: how the exam works and how to prepare

Original practice questions written from the Indiana Driver's Manual (Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles, July 2026 edition) and checked against its text; not official BMV questions. Not affiliated with the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles. The real Indiana BMV Permit test at a glance: Two sections, signs and rules, 80% needed on each, question count not published. Use these free Indiana BMV Permit practice questions to learn the format and read the explanation and source note behind every answer.

Published Indiana BMV standard: 80% or higher correct on each of two components, traffic signs and traffic rules. The BMV does not publish how many questions are on the exam, so QuizCram's 40-question run is a benchmark, not an official length. A passed exam is valid for 180 days.

  • Pass both parts: the BMV needs 80% or higher on the sign section and on the traffic rules section, so strong rules cannot cover weak signs
  • Know the speed defaults the manual lists: 70 mph on a rural interstate (65 for trucks over 26,000 lb), 60 on a rural state divided highway, 55 on an urban interstate, 30 in most urban residential areas, 15 in alleys
  • Know the distances: stop 15 to 50 ft from the nearest rail, no passing within 100 ft of an intersection or railroad crossing, 3 ft when passing a bicyclist, low beams within 500 ft of oncoming traffic and 200 ft behind a vehicle
  • Know the Indiana-only rules: the Move Over law (change lanes or slow to 10 mph under the limit), 25/50/25 minimum insurance, aggressive driving needs three listed actions, and the 180-day probationary passenger and night limits

  1. Q1Alcohol and drugs

What device may a court require to test a driver's blood alcohol before the car starts?

    1. AA radar detector
    2. BA breathalyzer for passengers
    3. CAn ignition interlock device
    4. DA GPS tracker
    Show answer

    C. An ignition interlock device The court may require installation of an ignition interlock device, which mechanically tests the driver's blood alcohol level before the vehicle can be started. If eligible, the court may also order specialized driving privileges. A conviction can also bring a suspension of its own, and the court sets conditions placed on your driving privileges.

  2. Q2Intersections and turns

You and another driver reach an all-way stop at the same time. Who yields?

    1. AThe vehicle on the right
    2. BThe vehicle going straight
    3. CThe faster vehicle
    4. DThe vehicle on the left
    Show answer

    D. The vehicle on the left When two drivers arrive at an all-way stop at the same moment, the vehicle on the left shall yield the right of way. If there is any doubt who has the right of way, it is better to yield to the other driver.

  3. Q3Licensing (GDL)

You fail the knowledge exam. When can you retake it?

    1. AThe same day, after you review the manual for an hour
    2. BAfter six months, with a new application and fee
    3. CThe next business day
    4. DAfter 30 days, once you complete a driving course
    Show answer

    C. The next business day If you fail the knowledge exam you must wait until the next business day to retake it. You also have to arrive at the branch at least 30 minutes before it closes to take the computer-based exam that day. The wait applies to the knowledge exam, which has a different delay than the seven days for a failed driving skills exam.

Indiana BMV Permit FAQ

The BMV does not publish a question count. It says the exam is multiple choice, divided into two sections, one on traffic maneuvers and rules and one on traffic signs, and you need 80% or higher on each section to pass. Passed results are valid for 180 days, and you can retake a failed exam the next business day.

At 16 you can apply for a learner's permit by passing a vision screening and the knowledge exam. At 15 you also need proof of enrollment in a BMV licensed behind-the-wheel training provider. The permit is valid for two years, and you must hold it for 180 days before applying for a driver's license.

The Move Over law: when approaching an emergency vehicle with flashing red, red and white, or red and blue lights, you must change lanes away from it, or if you cannot, slow to 10 mph under the posted limit. The signs section also trips people up, because you need 80% on it separately from the rules.

No. They are original questions written from the Indiana Driver's Manual (July 2026) and checked against its text, with the chapter and page cited on every answer. QuizCram is not affiliated with the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

Yes. Open the exam simulator and sit a timed mock test of 20 questions built from the free questions, once, with no signup. Unlocking the exam adds full-length runs of 40 questions in 40 minutes (a practice clock), as many as you like, each a new draw from the whole bank.

The exam's agency publishes no topic weights, so it mixes topics in proportion to the question bank, favouring questions you missed before and never repeating one within a run. A retake is a new draw, so you will meet different questions. It is a practice mock test, not an official replica of the real exam.
