  1. Q1Licensing gdl

In Virginia's two-part knowledge exam, how many of the ten part-one sign questions must you answer correctly before part two opens?

    1. AAll ten
    2. BEight of the ten
    3. CSeven of the ten
    4. DHalf of them
    Show answer

    A. All ten Part one is a ten-question traffic-sign check, and a single miss ends the attempt before the general-knowledge questions appear. Part two is scored separately at 80 percent. Because signs are all-or-nothing, learn each sign by color, shape and meaning rather than hoping to guess a few.

  2. Q2Traffic signals markings

At a red light with no sign or red arrow against it, you may turn right in Virginia only after you:

    1. ASlow to walking speed and merge when no cars are visible
    2. BCome to a complete stop, look both ways and yield to pedestrians and other traffic
    3. CWait for a green arrow to appear
    4. DHonk to warn cross traffic and then proceed
    Show answer

    B. Come to a complete stop, look both ways and yield to pedestrians and other traffic A right turn on red is legal in Virginia, but only after a full stop at the stop line. You must then yield to pedestrians and traffic, including less visible motorcycles, bicycles and mopeds. A posted No Turn on Red sign or a red right arrow cancels the option entirely.

  3. Q3Intersections turns

Two vehicles from different directions reach an intersection with no signs or signals at the same moment. Who goes first?

    1. AThe driver on the left
    2. BThe driver in the larger vehicle
    3. CThe driver on the right
    4. DThe driver going straight
    Show answer

    C. The driver on the right When arrivals tie at an uncontrolled intersection, the driver on the left yields so the driver on the right goes first. If one vehicle arrives clearly earlier, that vehicle goes first instead. The same left-yields-to-right rule applies when a signal is dark and the intersection is treated as an all-way stop.

How to pass the Virginia DMV Permit

The order that works: learn the rules, drill until they’re automatic, then use the benchmark to check consistency.

  1. 1

Treat signs as their own gate: all ten part-one sign questions must be right before part two opens

  2. 2

Practice 40-question sets until you score 38+ twice in a row — the real test allows no sign misses and only 6 misses on rules

  3. 3

Learn the numbers the manual tests: 2-, 3- and 4-second following gaps by speed, 25 mph in residential areas, 15 ft from a hydrant, 20 ft from an intersection, 50 ft from a railroad crossing

  4. 4

Know the Virginia-only rules: a 15-day retake wait under 18, a U-turn counts as two left turns, reckless driving at 20 mph over or above 85 mph, three feet when passing a cyclist

  5. 5

Drill the sign questions until you can answer every one without a miss — one wrong sign ends the attempt

Virginia DMV Permit FAQ

40 in two parts, per the Virginia DMV. Part one is 10 road-sign questions and you must answer all ten correctly. Part two is 30 general knowledge questions and you must answer 24 correctly (80%). The two parts are scored separately.

You may take the exam only once per business day. If you are under 18 you must wait a full 15 days after a failed attempt. After three failures you cannot take it a fourth time until you complete the classroom part of driver education; an approved 8-hour course based on the manual may satisfy this if it is finished after the third failure.

Following distance changes with speed: two seconds under 35 mph, three seconds from 35 to 45 mph, and four seconds from 46 to 70 mph. And because all ten sign questions must be right, the signs matter more than their share of the test suggests.

No. They are original questions written from the Virginia Driver's Manual (April 2026) and checked against its text, with the manual section and page cited on every answer. QuizCram is not affiliated with the Virginia DMV.
