What the Arizona Permit Test Is

The Arizona test is short, so there is little room for a weak topic. This guide shows what the ADOT driver manual stresses, including the Arizona-only rules for dust storms, flash floods and emergency vehicles, and gives you a plan to start now with the free Arizona practice questions.

Step 1: Take a Practice Test Before You Study

Start with a cold run of the free Arizona practice questions. With only 6 misses allowed, you need to know early which topics cost you points. Read every explanation, including the questions you got right, and write down the topics you missed. That list is your study plan.

Step 2: Learn the Numbers and the Arizona-Only Rules

These come straight from the Arizona Driver License Manual:

  • Following distance: a 3-second cushion is the baseline; give yourself 3 to 6 seconds when conditions are poor.
  • Parking: not within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, and not within 50 feet of a railroad crossing.
  • Emergency vehicles: keep at least 500 feet behind a fire department vehicle responding to an emergency and at least 300 feet behind a police vehicle responding to a call.
  • Signalling: signal at least 100 feet (about 4 seconds) before a turn.
  • Freeways: do not cross a solid line or drive through a gore area when merging.
  • Dust storms: do not stop in the travel lane or the emergency lane; turn off your lights and take your foot off the brake, stay in the vehicle with your seat belt buckled, and wait until the storm passes.

Also review the Move Over AZ rule: when you approach a stopped emergency or disabled vehicle, reduce your speed, move over if you can, and proceed with caution.

Step 3: Retake Practice Until You Score Well Above 24

Because the real test allows only 6 misses, keep practising 30-question sets until you score 28 or better twice in a row. Use the topic pages for the areas you still miss, and the Arizona permit test summary for the format in one table.

Step 4: Book and Take the Test

Take the test at an MVD office, or through Permit Test @ Home if you are under 18 and a parent can start it from their MVD Now account. The MVD test stops once you have reached the pass mark or the maximum errors, and cell phones are not allowed in the testing area. If you do not pass, you can retake, and Arizona allows up to three written-test attempts on one application fee. Check the current waiting period with MVD before you plan your next try.
