What the Georgia Permit Test Is
Georgia is two tests in one sitting, and each is graded on its own. You can ace the road rules and still fail if you only get 14 of 20 signs. The Georgia DDS manual says the road signs test asks you to identify signs, signals and markers, and the road rules test covers driver responsibility, knowledge of laws and safe driving practices. This guide turns that into a plan, and you can start step one now with the free Georgia practice questions, with no signup.

Step 1: Take a Practice Test Before You Study
Start with a practice test, not the manual. A cold first run shows where you actually stand, so you don't spend an evening re-reading chapters you already know. Take the free Georgia practice questions the way you would take the real test: no looking things up and no guessing just to finish.
Then read the explanation on every question, including the ones you got right. Each answer cites the section of the manual it comes from, so every miss points you to the exact page to study.
Step 2: Study Only What You Missed
Open the Georgia Drivers' Manual and go straight to the sections behind your misses. Study signs on their own first, because that half is easy to win: shape and color tell you most of the answer. Then move to the road rules, where Georgia asks about following distance (you count one-thousand-one, one-thousand-two), the Super Speeder state fee of $200 and Georgia's own rules on school buses and high-occupancy lanes.
Step 3: Retake Until You Score Well Above the Pass Mark
Practice in 40-question sets and score the two halves separately. Aim for 18 or more on each half, so one off day on signs or on rules does not decide the result.
Use a timer and sit each practice test in one go. If one topic keeps costing you points, go back to the manual for it, then retest. When you pass practice tests comfortably on two different days, you are ready to book.
Step 4: Book and Take the Test
Knowledge exams are walk-in at every DDS Customer Service Center. Arrive early enough that you can start at least 30 minutes before closing. You cannot bring pens, pencils, paper or any wireless device into the testing area, and you may not talk to anyone but the examiner. DDS counts any violation as misconduct and a failed attempt.
Pay the $10 fee before you test. The fee is not refunded if you fail and you pay it again for each attempt.
What Happens After You Pass
The Class C instructional permit lets you drive a Class C vehicle when a licensed driver at least 21 years old sits beside you. It is valid for up to two years.
If you are 16 or 17 and want a Class D license, the manual requires a DDS-approved driver education course (30 hours of classroom instruction or an equivalent online course, plus 6 hours on the road with an instructor or the Parent Teen Driving Guide and at least 40 hours of other driving, including at least 6 at night) and the Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program. The manual also has teens hold the permit for one year and one day before the license (17-year-olds enlisted in the military are exempt).
If you do not pass, DDS's testing page describes a one-day wait after a first failure and seven days after a second; see the permit retake rules by state, and how Georgia compares in the hardest permit tests, ranked.
