  1. Licensing (GDL)1 of 20

What is the minimum age to be issued an Arizona graduated or motorcycle instruction permit?

    The answer

Answer: D. An applicant must be at least 15 years and 6 months old for a graduated or motorcycle instruction permit, and at least 18 for an operator permit. You must pass the Division's written test before an instruction permit is issued, though that requirement does not apply to commercial learner's permits.

  2. Traffic signals and markings2 of 20

What does a flashing red light mean in Arizona?

    The answer

Answer: D. A flashing red light has the same meaning as a stop sign. You must come to a complete stop and proceed with caution when the roadway is clear. A flashing yellow light is different: it means slow down and proceed with caution if the roadway is clear.

  3. Intersections and turns3 of 20

Two vehicles reach an intersection at about the same time. What must the driver on the left do?

    The answer

Answer: D. When two vehicles arrive at an intersection at about the same time, both must stop, and the driver on the left must yield the right-of-way to the driver on the right. The law does not actually give the right-of-way to anyone; it states who must yield, and no one may take it if a crash may result.

  4. Speed and space4 of 20

For most driving situations, how much following distance should you allow?

    The answer

Answer: B. Allow at least a 3-second following distance for most driving situations. Count after the vehicle ahead passes a fixed point such as a sign or overpass. Some situations need 3 to 6 seconds, and on slippery roads you should double the distance to 6 seconds or more.

  5. Alcohol and drugs5 of 20

If a test shows an alcohol concentration of 0.08 percent or more, what happens to your driving privilege?

    The answer

Answer: B. If you are stopped for driving under the influence and a test shows 0.08 percent or more (0.04 in a commercial vehicle requiring a CDL), you lose your driving privilege on the spot. You can be found guilty of DUI even below 0.08, and under 21 any alcohol concentration can lead to suspension.

Answer: D. You must come to a complete stop before reaching a school bus that is picking up or dropping off passengers, regardless of your direction of travel on an undivided roadway. You are driving when a severe dust storm approaches. What is the safest action?

    The answer

Answer: D. Pull aside as soon as possible, before visibility drops to zero. Drive completely off the highway and stop as far right as possible. Do not stop in the travel lane or emergency lane. Turn off your lights and take your foot off the brake, stay in the vehicle with your seat belt buckled, and wait for the dust storm to pass.

    The answer

Answer: B. Motorists are required to allow a minimum safe distance of 3 feet when passing a bicyclist traveling in the same direction. It is not safe to honk at a bicyclist when passing, because it may startle them and cause a crash. Bicyclists have the right-of-way under the same conditions as motorists.

    The answer

Answer: A. A steady yellow light is a warning that the light is about to turn red. If you have not entered the intersection, come to a safe stop. If you are already in it, continue moving and clear it safely. Speeding up to beat the light is illegal and could cause a crash.
