At what blood-alcohol concentration is it illegal to drive in Illinois?

    The answer

Answer: D. It is illegal to drive if your BAC is .08% or more. You can still be convicted of DUI at a lower BAC if your driving ability is impaired. Alcohol affects your vision and slows your reaction time even below the level of illegal intoxication, so even a small amount increases the chance of a crash.

  2. Intersections and turns2 of 20

At a four-way stop, who goes first?

    The answer

Answer: D. At an all-way stop, the first driver to stop is the first to go. If two vehicles arrive at the same time, the one on the left yields to the one on the right. Other drivers must wait their turn, and you may also see 3-WAY, 5-WAY or ALL-WAY panels under the stop sign at such intersections.

  3. Licensing (GDL)3 of 20

For most adult drivers, how long is an Illinois driver's license valid?

    The answer

Answer: D. An Illinois driver's license is valid for four years and expires on the driver's birthday. The exceptions are drivers under 21, whose license runs out three months after their 21st birthday, drivers ages 81 to 86, who get two years, and drivers 87 and older, who renew every year.

  4. Occupant safety4 of 20

At what age and above must all drivers and passengers wear safety belts in Illinois?

    The answer

Answer: A. Illinois law requires drivers and passengers age 8 and older to wear safety belts in the front and back seats, even in vehicles with air bags. Passengers under age 8 must instead be secured in an appropriate child restraint system. The driver is responsible for making sure every passenger obeys the safety belt law and the Child Passenger Protection Act.

  5. Parking5 of 20

Who may park in a space equipped with a charging station for electric vehicles?

    The answer

Answer: C. Some parking areas have spaces equipped with charging stations for electric vehicles. Only electric vehicles are allowed to park in those designated spaces, so a gas-powered car should use a regular space. The manual lists this rule alongside the parking rules for persons with disabilities, which also reserve certain spaces for specific vehicles.

  6. Passing schoolbus6 of 20

You are on a two-lane road and a school bus ahead is stopped with flashing lights and its stop arm extended. What must you do?

    The answer

Answer: C. Unless you are on a four-lane road traveling opposite the bus, you must stop before meeting or passing a school bus that is loading or unloading. This applies on two-lane roads in rural areas and in cities, on any roadway, and in school parking lots.

Which statement about high beams and bicyclists is correct?

    The answer

Answer: D. High beam lights should not be used at night when approaching an oncoming bicyclist because glare can blind the rider. Dim your headlights as you would for oncoming cars, since bright light can blind a bicyclist and make them lose control.

  8. Traffic signals and markings8 of 20

What does a flashing yellow light mean?

    The answer

Answer: B. A flashing yellow is a caution signal. You may enter the intersection, but you should slow down and watch for other traffic and pedestrians. Slow down, look for traffic and pedestrians, and be ready to stop before you continue through.

  9. Road signs9 of 20

What does a diamond-shaped sign generally indicate?

    The answer

Answer: B. Diamond-shaped signs are warning signs. They may be yellow, yellow-green or orange with black words or symbols, and they warn you about hazards or possible hazards on or near the roadway. When you see one, slow down and use caution, because conditions ahead may require you to change speed or position.

How strong must the foot brake be in terms of stopping distance at 20 mph?

    The answer

Answer: C. The foot brake must be strong enough to stop a vehicle traveling 20 mph within 30 feet. The emergency or parking brake must stop the vehicle within 55 feet at the same speed, and it must also be able to hold the vehicle on a grade or hill. Motor-driven cycles need only one brake.

  11. Speed and space11 of 20

What is the default speed limit in a city or town area when no other limit is posted?

    The answer

Answer: D. Unless signs say otherwise, city and town areas have a 30 mph limit in Illinois. The other defaults in the manual are 70 mph on interstates and tollways, 65 mph on four-lane highways, 55 mph on other highways and rural areas, 15 mph in alleys and 20 mph in school zones. Local municipalities may post different limits.

How may cannabis be transported in a vehicle?

    The answer

Answer: B. Cannabis may only be transported in a vehicle in a sealed, odor-proof, child-resistant container. Neither the driver nor any passenger may use cannabis in a motor vehicle. Illinois also bars driving while impaired by cannabis, and driving while impaired or transporting cannabis illegally may cost you your driving privileges.

You are on the terminating road of a T intersection with no signs or signals. Who has the right of way?

    The answer

Answer: C. At a T intersection with no signs or signals, the driver on the terminating highway must yield to cross traffic, so the driver on the through road goes first. The manual's figure shows the vehicle on the stem of the T giving way. This is one of several right-of-way situations the manual lists for uncontrolled intersections.

  14. Licensing (GDL)14 of 20

Which license class does a driver need to operate an ordinary passenger car in Illinois?

    The answer

Answer: C. The Rules of the Road says a driver who seeks a basic license to operate a car in Illinois is issued a Class D license. Classes are set by the gross vehicle weight rating of the vehicle you drive, so a normal passenger car falls under the basic class. Motorcycle and commercial privileges follow separate procedures and manuals, so they are not part of the basic car license.

At what volume is a vehicle's sound system illegal on a highway?

    The answer

Answer: C. It is illegal to operate or permit a sound system, radio or player, to be run at a volume that can be heard 75 feet or more from a vehicle being driven on a highway. This keeps drivers able to hear sirens and horns.

You park facing uphill with a curb. Which way should the front wheels point?

    The answer

Answer: B. Facing uphill with a curb, turn the front wheels away from the curb. In every case, also put the gear selector in park and set the parking brake if necessary.

Is it legal to flash your turn signals as a courtesy to tell another driver it is safe to pass?

    The answer

Answer: A. Illinois law prohibits flashing your turn signals as a courtesy or do-pass signal to other drivers. A driver who passes must decide independently whether the pass is safe, check that the left lane is clear of oncoming traffic for enough distance, and return to the right lane only when the whole passed vehicle is visible in the rearview mirror.

    The answer

Answer: D. An autocycle is a three-wheeled vehicle that has a steering wheel and seating that does not require the driver to straddle or sit astride it. A green arrow pointing up means what?

    The answer

Answer: D. When a green arrow points upward you may go straight ahead only. A green arrow pointing to the right allows a right turn, and one pointing to the left allows a left turn. In every case you should first yield the right of way to traffic and pedestrians already within the intersection or crosswalk.
