CompTIA A+ Core 1 Troubleshooting (28% of the Exam): Every Symptom in Domain 5 and What Causes It

Hardware and Network Troubleshooting is the largest domain on the 220-1201 exam. Why Domain 5 Decides Your Score

Hardware and Network Troubleshooting is 28% of the CompTIA A+ Core 1 exam (220-1201) — the largest of its five domains, and the one that produces most of the performance-based questions. Its objectives are written as lists of symptoms: a clicking drive, a swollen battery, port flapping, ghost images on a print. Every question in the domain is the same shape — here is what the user reports, which cause fits, what do you do first — so the fastest way to score is to know, for each listed symptom, the one or two causes CompTIA has in mind.

This guide goes objective by objective through all seven symptom lists in the 220-1201 document and pairs each symptom with its exam cause and first action. It also explains what changed in this version of the exam: the six-step troubleshooting methodology is still printed in the objectives, but CompTIA now states it is not tested. The Six-Step Method — Still Worth Knowing

CompTIA's troubleshooting methodology was a numbered objective in the previous exam (220-1101) and produced reliable "what is the next step" questions. In 220-1201 the objectives document keeps the list but says the decision was made not to include it in the exam. Two reasons to learn it anyway: it is how the scenario questions are still structured (they always ask for the next step, and the next step is always the next rung), and it is how a technician is expected to work.

  1. Identify the problem — question the user, identify symptoms, check for recent changes, and back up before making any change.
  2. Establish a theory of probable cause — question the obvious first (is it plugged in?), then research the knowledge base if needed.
  3. Test the theory — if it holds, move on; if not, form a new theory or escalate.
  4. Establish a plan of action and implement the solution — one change at a time, following vendor guidance.
  5. Verify full system functionality and put preventive measures in place.
  6. Document findings, actions and outcomes.
The exam's hidden rule: cheapest and least disruptive first. When two answers would both work, the one that costs nothing and changes nothing (reseat the cable, check the input source, restart the print spooler) comes before the one that replaces a part. Replacing the motherboard is almost never the right first step.

RAID is not backup. The exam will offer "the data is safe because the array is RAID 5" as a distractor after a two-drive failure or an accidental deletion. Redundancy survives a drive; only a backup survives a mistake.

Worked Scenarios

Scenario 1

A user's desktop reboots at random during video calls. The case is warm and the CPU fan is loud. The most likely cause?

Overheating. Random shutdown plus heat plus a fan working hard points to thermal protection kicking in. First action: clean the heatsink and check the paste — not "replace the power supply", which fits "no power", and not "replace the motherboard", which is never first.

Scenario 2

After a switch replacement, one PC shows "limited connectivity" and its address is 169.254.12.7. Other PCs on the same switch are fine.

The PC did not get a DHCP lease. Because its neighbours are fine, the server is up; the likely cause is that this port was patched to the wrong VLAN or the cable is bad. First action: renew the lease and, if that fails, check the port configuration and the patch cable.

Scenario 3

A laser printer prints pages with a faint copy of the previous page on each one.

Ghosting from a worn drum or a failed cleaning step. Replace the drum (or imaging unit); low toner would give faded, not repeated, output.

Scenario 4

A user's phone case no longer closes and the screen is lifting at one corner.

Swollen battery. The correct answer is a safety one: stop using and charging it, do not press or puncture it, and have the battery replaced and disposed of through an approved channel.
