Crossroad Sign: what it means and what to do

Yellow diamond warning sign with a black plus-shaped crossroad symbol

A crossroad sign means another road crosses yours ahead, so traffic may enter from both sides. Be ready to slow down.

Warning · MUTCD W2-1 · Checked October 8, 2026

What it looks like

A yellow diamond with a black plus-shaped symbol: a thick line for your road crossed by a thinner one.

What to do

  1. Look ahead for traffic entering from either side and for traffic controls at the intersection.
  2. Be ready to slow down or stop.
  3. Take extra care if your view is blocked by trees, buildings or parked cars.

On the permit test

Tests show the plus symbol and ask what it means; the answer is an intersecting road, not a railroad.
