Step 1: Take a Practice Test Before You Study
Start with a practice test, not the manual. A cold first run shows where you actually stand, so you don't spend an evening re-reading chapters you already know. Step 2: Study Only What You Missed

Step 3: Retake Until You Score 90% Twice

Track your scores rather than glancing at the last one. A climb from 68% to 82% to 94% shows the plan is working and tells you which topics still drag you down. Aim each retake at those topics:
- Missed two or more sign questions: review the sign chapter, then retest.
- Missed right-of-way questions: review four-way stops and yield rules.
- Missed number questions: go back to the list in step two.
Step 4: Take the Real Test
Once you have cleared 90% twice, choose how to test:
- Online through BMV Online Services, from age 15 years and 6 months. You then take the vision screening at a deputy registrar when you buy your permit. Online testing is limited to two attempts in six months, so don't use it for a practice run.
- In person at any driver exam station or a deputy registrar location that offers testing. Retakes there are unlimited, 24 hours apart.
