Total stopping distance for an air brake vehicle is made up of which four parts?

    The answer

Answer: D. The four components add together: perception distance, reaction distance, brake lag distance and braking distance. Air brakes add the lag term because pressure must travel through the lines before the brakes apply. The wrong lists mix in terms the manual does not use, such as steering distance, unloading distance, engine drag and air loss.

About how much distance does air brake lag add at 55 mph on dry pavement?

    The answer

Answer: A. Air must flow through the lines after the pedal moves, so the brakes engage later than hydraulic brakes would. At 55 mph that lag accounts for roughly 32 extra feet before braking distance even begins. Twelve feet is too short for the delay you would feel, and the larger figures of 52 or 72 feet overstate it.
